Competent person service

A named competent person for your business.

Every employer has to appoint a competent person to help them meet their health and safety duties. It is a legal requirement under Regulation 7 of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, and it is the first thing SSIP schemes, main contractors and housebuilders ask you to name. Most small firms have nobody in house to fill it. We take the role: a chartered practitioner with thirty years in high consequence environments, named on your paperwork and on the end of the phone.

Named on your paperwork
We are named as your competent person on SSIP applications, tender and PQQ forms, and main contractor approval packs. You get an appointment certificate to upload with them.
Advice when you need it
Phone, video call or email when a question comes up: a new job, a new piece of kit, a near miss, a client asking for something you have not done before. Straight answers, not templates.
Your documents kept current
An annual review of your health and safety policy and core arrangements, plus help with your yearly SSIP renewal, so what is written down still matches how you work.
Who it is for
Subcontractors chasing approved lists
Trades going for SSIP accreditation and housebuilder or main contractor approval, who need a competent adviser named before the forms will go through.
Small firms with no in house safety
Businesses where health and safety lands on the desk of someone with a different day job, and the owner wants a qualified professional to call on.
Growing firms
Once you employ five or more people, your policy and the significant findings of your risk assessments must be written down. We make sure they are, and that they are right.

Common questions
What is a competent person in health and safety?
Regulation 7 of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 requires every employer to appoint one or more competent persons to help them meet their health and safety duties. Competent means having the training, experience and knowledge to give sound advice for the work you actually do.
Does my business need one?
Yes, if you employ people. Most small firms have nobody in house with the training to fill the role, so they appoint an external adviser. If you employ five or more people, your health and safety policy and the significant findings of your risk assessments must also be in writing.
Can the competent person be someone outside my business?
Yes. The regulations prefer someone from your own staff where you have a competent employee. Where you do not, appointing an external chartered adviser is the normal and accepted route.
Can you be named on our SSIP application and tender forms?
Yes. SSIP schemes such as SMAS Worksafe and CHAS, main contractors and housebuilders all ask who your competent health and safety adviser is. You name us, and you get an appointment certificate to upload with your application.
What does it cost?
From £60 a month per site by direct debit, depending on the size of your business and the work you do. Cancel with 30 days notice, no tie in, and no VAT added. Extra work such as site visits, audits or new risk assessments is quoted and agreed with you before it starts: £350 a half day or £700 a full day.
